The type of stone used for the Soutajapatsas monument stone at the Sulkava market square is mica gneiss, or more precisely garnet-cordierite mica gneiss, typical to the Saimaa area. The stone is multicoloured and richly hued: dark biotites and plagioclase crystals form a base intersected by light quartz and feldspar dikes. The stone is also dotted by grains of dark red garnet and blue-grey cordierite. The stone quarried from the local surroundings and used in building is known as Amadeus.
